there's this road, and then there's just lava

If you ever want to be reminded that humans are not in control on this planet, visit an active lava flow. Rick and I drove south from our rental house on the east shore of the Big Island, past Pahoa. First there were big signs that said "Road closed ahead." And then a single lane over the top of an old lava flow that appears to have taken out everything - buildings, trees, entire forests. It's like you were on the surface of another planet, not driving on a Hawaiian island on your vacation.

So we drove over the old lava flow. Twice. Then the road really was closed ahead, and we parked. It was evening, and we took a short hike across a field of lava that looks mostly like hardened waves of rippled cake batter down to the edge of the ocean.

Less than a mile away, Pu'u O'o Crater was flowing lava into the ocean. Steam rose up in an enormous cloud of white. As it got dark, the furnace red glow of the molten lava reflected up into the cloud. The moon was just past new - a Cheshire moon - Venus close by. It's dark quickly. And then there was just the light of lava.

The first spit of rain sent most of the other tourists packing back to their cars. But it wasn't cold and we had our rain gear, so we stayed as long as possible.

Awe is inadequate a word for standing on a mound of hardened lava watching the earth birth new land. Steam and light flared and glowed and flamed and sent sparking blobs up in red-gold flares like primal fireworks. Few other times in my life have I ever been so stunned. It was beyond amazing.

Hawai'i. I'm just happy to be here.

retro family in pictures

I scanned a bunch of pics in recently and thought I would post a few, mostly because they just crack me up. We're such a Motley Hoffman Crue.

Nichole for Halloween - and months afterward. She wouldn't even let me wash her kitty shirt because she wanted to wear it every day - I had to wash it after she went to bed.

- no, we were not homeless and we did not live in a cardboard box, at least not in real life. I believe we lived in the Avenues up by the University.

yin and yang

Rick took the little girls to the coast last week along with our dear friend Jackie, who was here visiting from the UK. I had to work, so they all came home tired and happy, shoes filled with sand, and with salt water taffy and chocolate-covered espresso malt balls. Mmmm.

If there was ever two people who could balance each other so completely, it's Becca and Kristen. The BFF Yin and Yang.

valentines, this and that

I remember when Valentine's Day used to be a much simpler process.

Now to uphold the family bra-and-panty valentine's tradition established so many years ago, it means that we all go out shopping together. Rule number One - never purchase your foundation article without trying it on. 4.5 hours later, all is well in the realm of the family tradition. For some reason, Rick declined an invitation to join us at the mall. And Jake opted for the post-mall visit (Smart man. Oh, and the chocolate-raspberry cake was delicious. We approve of you giving Becca other such baked gifts in the future.)

My darling husband gave me another beautiful piece from Santa Fe to be my Valentine. This is from artist Jennifer Tafoya Moquino. How did he know that one of my most favorite trees are the Raindrop Trees (quaking aspen) from the mountains of Utah and Idaho? (probably just a coincidence - Not). It is the only tree I miss here in the beauty of the Pacific Northwest and all its trees.

Rick and I went out to see Slumdog Millionaire. What a powerful movie. It was stunning. It is a definite see-again movie. Plus, bonus points, MIA's "Paper Planes" (love it) and the opening song "O Saya" was amazing. Double thumbs up from this happy Valentine.

Friday night we got a visit from the Seth-n-Amy clan and all the Christensen Rugrats. (Jayne: "What's your fway-vit pwincess, Aunt Serri?" Me: "Princess Aurora." Jayne: sage head nod. "Sweeping Booty.") Kristen and Becca fed all the children cereal and burned the brownies, so it balances out in the karmic universe.

Love to you all. Hope your Valentine's Day was wonderful and filled with love and family as mine was.
